Book Signing 12/4/21: Barnes & Noble, Liverpool NY

It’s happening! I’m so excited to be holding a book signing at Barnes & Noble bookstore in Liverpool, NY on Saturday, December 4th from 12-2PM. This is a huge bucket list item for me, and if you live in the Central NY area, I hope you can join me to celebrate.

Last year threw us all for a loop. I had a signing lined up, but when Covid hit, I had to cancel it. You can imagine my disappointment!

Now that public events are a thing again—and the world is trying to get back to normal—my signing is back on! I’ll have copies of all my available print books, and I’m featuring THE SERPENT IN THE STONE and my new urban fantasy, FREAK FRAT! I’ll also be bringing lots of goodies to share with visitors, so come visit and score a holiday treat for yourself or a loved one. Happy Holidays, and happy reading!

Let ‘em Drive

One of these days, I’m gonna learn.

It’s been a fitful year of stop-and-start with That Damn Book (aka Book Two of the FREAK FRAT series). Not even a year, actually; I’ve been working on this book for several.  You’d think, since I have over ten years of professional writing and publishing experience under my belt, I’d get the hint that there’s a much easier way to write than—What is it they say? Staring at the page until your forehead bleeds?

But every time, I get stubborn and bossy. Every. Single. Time.

Here’s a hint: don’t do what I do.

The thing is, I am a very Type A personality, which is a nice way of saying I’m a control freak. I like to be the one making the decisions as to what I do in my book. That’s why I (loosely) outline. I like to know where things are going, and have an idea of how they’re going to get there. Not everything. I like surprises. But I also like steering.

My characters, unfortunately, hate when I drive. We argue All The Time over it, and every time, I think I’m right, and we spend several days not speaking to one another.

But when I get over myself, something amazing happens. If I give up the wheel and throw my hands in the air like that Carrie Underwood song, my characters magically start doing the awesome thing I had been wanting them to do for days.

If you have a modicum of writing experience and know how to tell a basic story—and you’ve spent enough time developing great characters—you need to trust them. Write that down. It’s important. Trust Your Characters. If they take you on a crazy tangent, let them. Chances are, they have something to tell you that will add an interesting layer to your story. Time and again, I’ve had to give up control after a frustrating stop, and my characters say or do something that startles and delights me. My job, as I should know by now, is to sit my butt in the chair at the same time every day and start writing so they have a chance to say their piece.

TL/DR: Give yourself a structure for your story, but don’t be afraid to let your characters take that dirt road that’s not on the map. That’s where the good scenery is. And that’s how you end up not like me, with note cards tagged with Unusable Scenes.

FREAK FRAT is on sale!

 Welcome to the FREAK FRAT!

As you may know, this book is a long time in coming. It's been a labor of love for many (many, many) years, and now it's on sale everywhere!

FREAK FRAT is an urban fantasy, and it's my first full-length indie novel. I'm so excited and grateful to my beta readers and my street team, who took Joe and his friends under their wings and then asked for more. I truly could not have published it without you.

About FREAK FRAT:

It's hard getting a life when you're undead.

Freshman Year Checklist:

  • Find the bit-and-run girl who turned me into a vampire
  • Join supernatural beings support group
  • Call Dad
  • Cram for midterms
  • Find out who's trying to kill me

Joe Dietrich has a lot on his plate: college classes, a lonely divorced dad, and a weirdo gamer roommate. Oh, yeah, and that vampire thing. If only he didn't have a supernatural hit squad after him...or a frenemy who'd rather take his head off than teach him to be a Supernat. If Joe can survive all that, final exams ought to be a piece of cake.

Good thing he hasn't tried asking that Grim Reaper girl out on a date.

Excerpt from FREAK FRAT:

I watched Pitt and Poole for a second, wondering why the SBS hadn't stuck me in a class with other new vampires. Was this some kind of sorting process? Maybe I'd meet them when I got better at this. Maybe there weren't many vampires in Luke's Valley. That must be why Poole was sent back to the baby class. I felt a little better.

Seth was still talking. "Orientation is every Sunday evening. You'll keep coming here to this room until you're ready to progress. These supernaturals will become like your new brothers and sisters in the weeks and months ahead."

Oh, God. It's like Delta Kappa Wacko. A sinking sensation started back up, somewhere in my middle, and spread outward. Like college isn't bad enough.

Book Review: BIRD BY BIRD by Anne Lamott

Just got done reading this, and already I know it’s one of the few writing books that’ll stay on my keeper shelf.

This is as much an instruction on the writing life as it is on life in general. Anne Lamott is darkly funny, starkly honest, and encouragingly hopeful. So much of what she says in this book resonates with me in ways other books on writing have not. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been writing for years, this book is worth the read.

Lamott pulls no punches when she talks about the writing life. Cuss words are used. Neuroses are had. But that’s writing. We are all a little crazy, and it’s both maddening and beautiful. All of that comes across in this book, and ultimately it reminds us that as writers, we’re not alone. There’s a comfort in that. So much so, that I’m sure I’ll read this book again, as soon as I have one of those moments where I think my writing is either a) impeccable or b) complete trash.

As writers do.

FREAK FRAT Presale / Back to Normal / ICE CREAM DELIGHTS

FREAK FRAT Presale!

Book day never gets dull. While I was disappointed to see the shipment arrived imperfect, with some bent corners, I’m in discussions with the shipper to correct it. FREAK FRAT’s first copies have officially arrived, and the thrill of seeing one’s own books in print is always special.

Back to Normal

Our son starts his freshman year of high school tomorrow, and if you’ve followed our trials, you know this is a big milestone in his health progress. I am so proud of his progress and his drive to chase the things he loves, like math and science as well as his ever-present love of snowboarding.

For me, the return to normal means going back to the day job regularly. I hope that also means a return to my routine of morning writing sprints. I often get more done in a half hour of writing than in hours of allotted time. This means (I hope) more books, sooner, for you!

ICE CREAM DELIGHTS

Finally, a happy surprise for you: SUNCATCHERS AND SHERBET is now available in print! ICE CREAM DELIGHTS is a delicious anthology in the One Scoop or Two series featuring two contemporary romances sure to help your summer linger all year long! Order it at The Wild Rose Press by clicking here: https://www.thewildrosepress.com/product/ice-cream-delights

Back in the Saddle

After the upheaval of 2020, even a little bit of "normal" is a very welcome thing. I was watching a TV show just this morning where two of the characters were simply having coffee at a diner. I didn't even realize how much I miss that: the simple act of going out for a meal. It's something I simply took for granted, pre-COVID. Now, it's one of many things "on hold" in this new dynamic.

Fortunately, life and time do not stop even for a pandemic. One of the blessings of living in this new era is that things must change. We will find an end to this worldwide quarantine, and life will continue. We will get back to having dinner out with friends and family.  Flowers still grow.  Gardens can still be planted.  The beach is still there, waiting for us.

One surprising thing that has carried me through this enforced "quiet" is writing.  The first quarter of the pandemic was financially my best ever as far as my writing was concerned.  It helped enormously when we experienced the emergency of my son going into the hospital, and I can never be grateful enough to the readers who helped me support my family in that way.

Since things closed down, I've also had much more time to write.  For a while, I didn't want to.  It was hard to get into the groove when the entire world was scared and suffering, but eventually, my muse convinced me I needed that therapeutic release from the world's woes.  Art is good for the soul.  In fact, it's necessary.

And it worked.

I submitted a new novella to my publisher.  I'm back to writing in a book that had been frustrating me for ages.  I'm getting new ideas.  Maybe, just maybe, my muse knew what she was doing, and that I had needed this enforced rest to refill the well.  It's good to be getting back to normal, with the promise of more normalcy to come.

In the meantime, I can still get a coffee.

Guest Blogger: J.C. McKenzie!

Happy New Year, readers! Today, I welcome international bestselling author J.C. McKenzie, who joins us to talk about her new urban fantasy novel, CONSPIRACY OF RAVENS. Let's dive right in!

1) How did you get started writing?

I've been interested in writing stories from a young age. My mom (also an author) encouraged me to write. The first "book" I wrote was in grade 7 and it detailed what happened *after* the happily ever after in Snow White's story. I used to imagine fantasy worlds and designed maps in high school, but it would take awhile for me to complete my first novel. This happened when I returned to Canada from living abroad for a few years and found myself in that awkward “I’m broke and have no job” stage of life. Like any other time I faced anxiety-inducing events, I turned to reading for an affordable escape from reality and stress relief. After binging on several fantasy series, I started having strange dreams and the urge to write them down. I hadn’t had this feeling since high school, which I ignored at the time, because I was too busy withering in self-doubt like pretty much every other teenager on the face of this Earth. This time, the push was more forceful. I wanted to write a story of a fictitious woman who wasn’t me, nor meant to be a fantastical version of me in any way. I viewed the characters like a spectator and the dreams of the woman’s life and journey were so vivid and real, I HAD to write them down. And since I had no job, I had the time! This woman’s story ended up being the first manuscript I ever completed. I called it “Earthen.” The manuscript was 80,000 words, 300 pages, and a hot, hot mess. It collected proverbial dust on my hard drive but I went on to write other stories.

2) What interests or excites you most about your genre(s)?

I love escapism, especially right now. I think that's what makes fantasy and all its subgenres appeal to me so much--the ability to escape in a fictitious world.

3) Who or what is your favorite inspiration when writing?

My mom, Jo-Ann Carson, is one of my biggest inspirations, along with Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews and Faith Hunter to name a few. When writing, I actually try to *not* think about other writers. I have a bad case of imposter syndrome, and if I thought of all the authors I admire and how well they craft stories, I wouldn't get a single word down!

4) Tell me about your latest book or work in progress.

Conspiracy of Ravens is best described as a dystopic urban romantasy, which is an urban fantasy with strong romantic and dystopic elements. Set in Vancouver after a "faepocalypse", the main character, Raven, is faced with tough decisions to save her brother.

Here's the blurb:

Raven Crawford knows better than to venture into the seductive world of the dark fae or agree to any of their salacious promises. She plans to pay off her debts so she can get on with her life and stay far away from the denizens of the Underworld.

Unfortunately, her numbskull twin steals from the most tempting and lethal fae of them all. Now, Raven must help the Lord of Shadows get back what her idiot brother stole. Her only weapons? Just a little ingenuity and a whole lot of snark. It’s suicide for sure, but she’ll do anything to protect her twin.

5) Please share with us the first paragraph of your latest work.

The bell above the entrance door chimed and Raven’s impending doom walked into Dan’s Diner. She froze with a coffee carafe in one hand and an empty mug in the other.

Buy CONSPIRACY OF RAVENS for a limited-time price of $0.99, now through February 5th, at:
